Xperia Z6 is the upcoming flagship from Sony in 2016. As Sony has already unveiled Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 compact and Xperia Z5 Premium flagships on September 2nd, this isn’t too early to start discussion about the upcoming Xperia Z6 series. The Japanese tech giant may totally revamp the current design in order to make Xperia Z6 flagship. It may follow the Apple iPhone 6 Metal and Glass design in making the next Xperia Z flagship. The Japanese tech giant may unveil the next Z6 series flagships in MWC 2016 which takes place in March 2016.
Xperia Z6 and Z6 Compact Display and Resolution
Sony has unveiled Xperia Z5 with 5.2 inches IPS LCD Display with 1080p resolution only. So the Japanese tech giant may release the Xperia Z6 with 5.2 or 5.3 inches Triluminos LED Display with 2K Resolution. The compact variant of Z6 may come with 4.8 inches display with FHD resolution. Corning Gorilla Glass 4 acts as both display and body protection for Xperia Z6. In the next flagship from Sony we may see very thin bezels to increase screen to body ratio.
Xperia Z6 and Z6 Compact Processor and Ram
Sony used the Snapdragon 810 chipset in the recently launched Xperia Z5 flagship. It contains 8 cores and also supports 64-bit. According to a report, Sony Xperia Z6 series will be powered by the upcoming Snapdragon 820 64-bit SoC which contains Four custom cores named Kryo. These four Kryo cores are going to be clocked at 2.2 Ghz and built on 14nm process. The new Kryo cores are custom cores and also are the successors of Krait cores which powered Snapdragon 800, 801 and 805 chipsets. The Kryo cores are the first 64-bit custom cores from Qualcomm. The Kryo cores are specially designed for heterogenous computing : ability to combine different functional cores of the SoC, CPU, GPU and Hexagon 680 DSP. According to Qualcomm, the new Kryo cores give 2 times the performance of Snapdragon 810 and also 2 times more power efficient than SD 810. Symphony system manager is a new feature coming with Snapdragon 820 chipset. This new feature co – ordinates all cores of SoC, GPU, Display Engine, DSP and Specta Image processor. It clocks the CPU core according to task and also combines different functions of chipset according to needs. According to some alleged benchmarks of Snapdragon 820, it beats Samsung Exynos 7420 chipset and Apple A9 chipset scores. Snapdragon 820 single core score is almost equal to Apple A9 chip single core score. So we will see Xperia Z6 flagship with more processing power than Xperia Z5. Snapdragon 820 also coming with Adreno 530 GPU which is 40% more power efficient than its predecessors. It also gives 40% more performance than Adreno 430 which is present in Snapdragon 810. Snapdragon 820 also contains X12 Modem which can support Cat.12 download speeds (600 MBPS) and Cat.13 upload speeds (150 MBPS). So Xperia Z6 will enjoy much faster download speeds. Hexagon DSP of Snapdragon 820 supports low power operations. More details about the chipset which powers Z6 will be revealed in coming days. Xperia Z5 contains 3GB Ram so that we may see the next flagship with 4GB Ram.
Xperia Z6 and Z6 Compact Camera
Sony Xperia Z5 series contain a rear camera of 23MP which is an upgrade over previous 20.7 MP. This camera also supports faster auto focus feature and can record 4K video. So Xperia Z6 may feature the same camera of 23MP or Sony may upgrade it to 25 MP. Dual LED flash will also present on the rear side of Z6. We may see Z6 series with 8MP Front camera with LED flash for excellent selfies. Autofocus, HDR and Optical Image Stabilization features will be much better in Xperia Z6. Image and Video quality will also be better in Xperia Z6 as Snapdragon 820 has dual image signal processors. More details about the camera of Xperia Z6 will be revealed in coming days.
Xperia Z6 Internal Memory
Sony released Xperia Z5 flagship with 32 GB internal memory and MicroSD slot. Users can extend memory upto. 200GB with microSD. Sony may increase internal memory to 64GB in the Xperia Z6. But Sony may release Xperia Z6 Compact with 32 GB internal memory. Xperia Z6 may support microSD card upto 256GB. Xperia Z6 Compact may also also support microSD card upto 256GB.
Xperia Z6 Battery and Type-C Port
Sony used non-removable battery of 2900 mAh in Xperia Z5. But there is no Type-C port in Z5 although it supports Quick Charge which charges upto 60% in just 30mins. Qualcomm just unveiled Quick Charge 3.0 which comes with Snapdragon 820 SoC. Quick Charge 3 can charge upto 80% in just 35 mins only. Xperia Z6 may be packed with a battery of 3200 mAh which supports Quick Charge 3.0. The Z6 series flagship may also come with Type-C USB port which speed up data transfer and charging.
Xperia Z6 and Z6 Compact Price
The 64GB internal memory variant of Xperia Z6 flagship may be priced in the range of $700-800. Full price list of Xperia Z6 will be revealed in coming days.
Xperia Z6 and Z6 Compact flagships will come with inbuilt Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system. They will receive future Android updates upto 2 years.
Fingerprint Sensor
Sony introduced fingerprint sensor in its phones with Xperia Z5. The power button has inbuilt fingerprint sensor which is present on right hand side of the phone. So users can easily use it with their right hand thumb. It creates a new trend in smartphones aganist Apple, Samsung’s front facing and Google Nexus rear facing fingerprint sensors. Sony may continue this feature in the next Xperia Z flagship too. So Xperia Z6 will have side fingerprint sensor which has integrated into home button. Sony also improves the performance of fingerprint sensor in the Xperia Z6. Android Marshmallow operating system which comes with Xperia Z6 has much support fingerprint sensor. Users can unlock their phone, make payments through mobile and log into websites with fingerprint sensor.
Quick Charge 3.0
Qualcomm recently revealed some details about the Quick Charge 3.0 which is the successor of Quick Charge 2.0. Latest Xperia Z5 series from Sony also supporting Quick Charge 2.0. So in the next year, Sony will release Xperia Z6 flagship with Quick Charge 3.0 support and ship necessary charger too. According to Qualcomm, Snapdragon 820 chipset which powers Xperia Z6, supports Quick Charge 3.0 feature. So with Quick Charge 3.0, Xperia Z6 can charge upto 80% in just 35 mins. Qualcomm is testing its upcoming Snapdragon 820 Chipset for a while through Geekbench 3. Now the test result of Snapdragon 820 v3 came into light. Snapdragon 820 scored 2032 points in single core test and 5910 points in multicore test. These scores are far higher from Samsung Exynos 7420. The multicore score of SD 820 even beat Apple A9 chip. As Snapdragon 820 is going to power Xperia Z6 series, the benchmark scores of Xperia Z6 will be much higher than its predecessors. The benchmark is showing that Snapdragon 820 contains 4 Kryo cores clocked at 2.2 Ghz. Kryo cores built on 14nm FinFET process and can be clocked upto 3.0 Ghz theoretically. The LTE-U Cat. 12 support of Snapdragon 820 also confirmed through the benchmark. More details about SD 820 chipset which powers Xperia Z6 will be revealed in coming days.

Google has unveiled the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system on September 29th. As we already told before, Sony is going to use Marshmallow operating system on Xperia Z6. According to some rumours, Google may release an update for Android 6.0 under version 6.0.1 or 6.1 in about two months. So most likely we will see the Xperia Z6 flagship with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS or Android 6.1 Marshmallow OS. New OS contains an improved Material user interface over Lollipop. More details will be revealed soon about Android 6.0.1 or Android 6.1 OS which comes with Xperia Z6.
Update on 7/10/2015 :
It looks like Qualcomm finished the testing of Snapdragon 820 Chipset and is going to start mass production in a few days. According to some rumours, the chipset will be present in the Xiaomi MI 5 smartphone which is expected to be coming in the next month. According to some reports, the finalised clock speed of Kryo cores in the Snapdragon 820 is 2.2 Ghz. Snapdragon 820 is a 64-bit Quad Core Processor and built on 14nm FinFET architecture. So that it consumes less power don’t go over heat. Hexagon 680 DSP which is present in SD 820 helps especially to perform low power operations. So Xperia Z6 which will be powered by Snapdragon 820 gives more backup time than Xperia Z5 and predecessors. The X12 LTE modem of Snapdragon 820 gives 600MBPS download speed and 150MBPS upload speeds in LTE-U band of 4G. Wifi speeds also will be improved in Xperia Z6 because of X12 Modem. Xperia Z6 will support next gen HD voice and Video calling over LTE and Wi-Fi because of X12 modem in Snapdragon 820 chipset.

A Latest report from China, claims that the Snapdragon 820 (MSM8996)from Qualcomm will be about 50% more efficient than Exynos 7420 chipset which powered Galaxy S6. New Snapdragon 820 will show much improvement in single thread over Exynos 7420 according to the report. This is good for users as most apps for Android run only single thread. It is allegedly confirmed that New Chipset will be built on 14nm process which more performance. It also support 4K video playback at 60fps without any log. Dual Image Signal processors improve Image quality. Snapdragon 820 also supports LTE-U networks which will be available for commercial use in 2016. So Xperia Z6 and Xperia Z6 compact flagships will be more faster and also can record Images and Videos with much clarity than present Xperia Z5 flagship. Xperia Z6 also support Cat.10 LTE download speeds according to latest report. More details about Snapdragon 820 will be revealed soon.

According to some recent rumours, Sony is going to delay the launch of Xperia Z6. Some Sony officials indirectly said that they won’t release any new flagships in the first half of 2016 and they are concentrating on the flagships that to be released in the second half of 2016 and in further years. So it seems that Xperia Z6 may come with many new features and also late. Some rumours claim that Sony is following Samsung’s and Apple’s schedule to release only one flagship per year. As these are rumours only, Sony has to confirm them before we believe in them. Full details about the release date for Xperia Z6 will be revealed soon.
Update on 1/11/2015 :
Recently some rumours fired about the overheating problem of Snapdragon 820 similar to its predecessor SD 810. But Qualcomm refutes them and said that Snapdragon 820 is not suffering from overheating. The Chipset giant also said that they are taking necessary measures to prevent overheating. Qualcomm said that Snapdragon 820 is building on 14nm process. So it seems that Snapdragon 820 chipset which powers Xperia Z6 will run cooler than SD 810 and also very power efficient. Previously Sony used Snapdragon 810 chipsets in Xperia Z3+ and Xperia Z5 flagships. Xperia Z3+ users reported overheating problems but in Xperia Z5, Sony used dual heat pipes to resolve the problem. We have to wait until Qualcomm releases the Snapdragon 820 SoC to confirm the overheating problem. According to latest reports, Qualcomm is going to release Snapdragon 820 in December 2015. So in a few days full details about Snapdragon 820 which powers Xperia Z6 flagship will be revealed.

On November 10th, Qualcomm officially unveiled the Snapdragon 820 Chipset. As we already written above, Snapdragon 820 SoC is going to power almost all major flagships of 2016 including Sony Xperia Z6. Earlier some features of Snapdragon 820 revealed by some reports and now Qualcomm officially confirmed them. Snapdragon 820 chipset contains Four Custom Kryo cores which are the successors of Krait cores. These Kryo cores are based on ARMV8 and built on Second Generation 14nm FinFET LPP process. So these cores are more power efficient than Exynos 7420 chipset by Samsung. These four Kryo cores look much similar but they are arranged in dual core setup in the chipset. One cluster of Dual Kryo cores is clocked at 2.2 Ghz and another cluster of Dual Kryo Cores are clocked in between 1.6-1.7 Ghz for low power operations. Snapdragon 820 Chipset also supports DDR4 Ram to decreae power consumption and increase performance.
Snapdragon 820 Chipset supports Camera upto 28MP and also support 4K recording, playback and uploading. So Sony may upgrade megapixels of Rear Camera of Xperia Z6 flagship. Xperia Z6 smartphone which is going to be powered by Snapdragon 820 supports Quick Charge 3.0. Quick Charge 3.0 allows Xperia Z6 flagship to charge upto 80% in just 35mins. So in about one hour Xperia Z6 will be fully charged. Snapdragon 820 also has support for both 802.11ad and 802.11ac 2×2 MU-MIMO which gives Wi-Fi connectivity 2-3 times faster than standard 802.11ac without MU-MIMO. X12 LTE modem in Snapdragon 820 supports LTE-U spectum of 4G. This LTE-U of 4G supports download speeds upto 600MBPS and allows upload speeds upto 150MBPS. An article on Christiantoday is claiming that Sony may not release the next major flagship in Xperia Z series until late 2016. According to the above article, Sony is in plans to launch a rumoured Xperia Z5 Ultra flagship with massive 6.44 inch Display in MWC 2016 which is going to takes place in February 2016. Xperia Z5 Ultra flagship is also coming with Snapdragon 820 chipset according to some rumours. So Sony Xperia Z6 might be an upgrade to Xperia Z5 Ultra flagship. So it seems that Xperia Z6 may also feature a larger increase Display size compared to its Xperia Z5. But as these are rumours only, we should take them with a pinch of salt. More confirmed details about Xperia Z6 launch date and Display size will be revealed in coming months.
Update on 8/12/2015 :
Antutu’s Weibo page allegedly revealed the names of flagships coming under Xperia Z6 and also revealed the screen sizes of next flagships from Sony. According to above post, Xperia Z6 is coming with 5.2 inch Display and Xperia Z6 Mini with 4 inch Display. Xperia Z6 Compact and Z6 Plus may sport 4.6 inch and 5.8 inch Displays respectively. The Xperia Z6 Ultra flagship may sport 6.4 inch Display according to the above post. The Antutu’s page also confirmed that except Z6 Mini, all Xperia Z6 will be powered by Snapdragon 820 chipset. The Xperia Z6 Mini might be powered by Snapdragon 620 SoC.
Update on 13/12/2015 :
T-Mobile showed up a slide in a conference that took place in Poland. That slide is showing that two New Xperia smartphones are coming in Q2 of 2016. T-Mobile didn’t say that they are Xperia Z6 series but it seems that Sony is going to launch the next flagship in May or April 2016. But Sony may announce the Xperia Z6 flagship in MWC 2016 which is going to takes place at the ending of February, in Barcelona. So the launch details and price of Xperia Z6 series will be revealed in a few days.
